Should sugar be in the same category as tobacco and alcohol?

It seems as though there is now a new killer out there and it's not what you would expect. It's sugar!

A study by Nature suggests that like tobacco and alcohol sugar should also be regulated by the Government.

Now I'm all for protecting the health of the general public but this seems like it may be going a little far. They are not only talking about raising taxes on sugary products but actually putting age limits on who can buy certain products just as they do with other, in my opinion, more dangerous products.

Robert Lustig, Laura Schmidt and Claire Brindis wrote the study are not against sugar products such as fruit but products where sugar is added.

“We believe attention should be turned to ‘added sugar,’ defined as any sweetener containing the molecule fructose that is added to food in processing,” the authors write. (And they argue the current dietary “bogeymen” — saturated fat and salt — deserve less scrutiny than the sweet white stuff.)

Personally I think that they are crazy. I understand what they are saying but in my opinion we have enough restrictions in this country and this is just another attempt at making us jump through pointless hoops to get what we're going to get anyway.
